History Of The DB5

Aston Martin DB5 'DB5/1409/R' was first delivered to Brooklands of Bond Street on the 18th January 1964 with the registration 5KO.

The DB5 had chrome wheels and a heated rear screen. The original livery was Goodwood Green with Connolly Vaumol leather in Fawn. One of Twenty-Five DB5 cars produced in Goodwood Green with Fawn (courtesy of the AMHT).

In 1964, the DB5 was delivered to a customer in Kent, then exported to New Zealand and registered on 19th October 1978. Whilst the DB5 was in New Zealand, the Aston Martin Owners Club were aware of the vehicle and its ownership. Copies of 'The Newsletter of the NZ Aston Martin Register' from Summer 2005-Autumn 2007 are within the history file.

Whilst '1409' was stationed in New Zealand, there was a change of owner on the 27th March 1979. Warrant of fitness inspections were carried out in New Zealand. Mr Murray Binning of Eastern Beach, Auckland, had ownership of '1409' on 20th August 2004 before Mr Paul Auston, Howick, Auckland, took ownership on 22nd November 2004. At this time, the DB5's livery was Silver with the registration 'AMDB5'. Both Mr Binning and Mr Auston were members of the NZ Aston Martin Register of Financial Members, and Mr Auston was a member of the UK AMOC.

Mr Auston temporarily imported '1409' back to the UK for extended maintenance work on 24th June 2006 before being imported back to New Zealand.

Whilst the DB5 was temporarily in the UK, it underwent various labour work by Aston Martin Specialist RS Williams. Most notably, a full overhaul of the original engine, fitting inlet manifolds, stripping the carburettors and cleaning cam covers. 

UK registration was carried out for '1409' in 2015 with the new registration 'BOE 146B'.

Single ownership with Mr Auston for 20 years, who kept invoices both from the car's time in New Zealand and the UK, including servicing works. ​

In February of 2025, the DB5 underwent an extensive restoration by renowned Aston Martin specialists Richards of England, returning the car back to its original livery of 'Goodwood Green' with Connolly Vaumol leather in Fawn, documented and presented through our signature matching restoration books. Following on from the extensive restoration, the DB5 had its first debut at the 2026 Yorkshire Elegance held at Grantley Hall, Ripon, where it won First in Class.
